Portland Music Teacher Sent Threatening Emails
Report #: 308
Date Reported: Tuesday, January 24, 2012
Status: Active and Ongoing
Severity: Low - Private Harassment
Primary Weapon: Email
Specific Location: Portland
City/Local Area: Portland
State/Territory: Oregon
Region: United States
A Portland music teacher bombarded STD Carriers Disease Control and Prevention Services with emails in failed attempts to coerce the owner into engaging in censorship against site policies. In the process she threatened to have third parties track down the founder of the service by going to his home, following him to work, and trying to stop him in his car.
STD Carriers advised her that the site has a policy for removing reports from the Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) Carrier Registry that provides an option for clean individuals to get tested, but she never took it upon herself to do so. STD Carriers also took the added step of attempting to contact the author and mitigate the situation, but all responses from the alleged author indicated that the alleged author believed the STD status of the subject to be accurate and that earlier requests by the alleged author to get the report removed were based on threats from the subject. Unfortunately for her the alleged author never verified his or her ownership of the email address used to create the account, so STD Carriers could not remove the report.
The above and beyond efforts of STD Carriers to help the subject still does not seem like enough for her. She continues to act out towards the site online.
UPDATE: As of 5/1/2012 The subject is no longer in the STD Registry. The removal came after a phone conversation with a law enforcement officer in which he verified that the alleged author was convicted of harassing the subject of the report and that she had gotten a restraining order against the author. In addition the author was arrested again in April of 2012 on identity theft charges. This report has since been edited to remove the name of the subject, but will stay up as an example of what can happen when you are too aggressive with someone who is trying to help you. In this case her badgering of the webmaster lowered her credibility and it was not until months later that the webmaster decided to have a second look at the case. When the case was revisited the law enforcement confirmation and the fact that the author used an email account from his own website to create a membership was enough to persuade STD Carriers into removing the report even though the person claiming to be Jon Groff never confirmed ownership of the email account. It is not often that authors sign up for the site using domain names they own, but it worked out well for the subject of the report because it made proving who wrote it easy.
