Date Reported: Saturday, December 4, 2010
Status: Past Incident
Severity: Severe - Cyberterrorism
Primary Weapon: Hacking
Specific Location: University of Tennessee
City/Local Area: Knoxville
State/Territory: Tennessee
Region: United States
David Kernell received a year in prison with three years of probation for hacking into Sarah Palin's Yahoo email account during the 2008 presidential election. Kernell is the son of a Tennessee politician with the Democratic Party who was hoping to dig up dirt on Palin for the purpose of derailing her Vice Presidential campaign. He would have succeeded had there been anything incriminating among Palin's emails, but instead he had to sit back and watch her ruin her own campaign all by herself just like everyone else.
Kernell said that he hacked into her account very easily just by impersonating her, claiming to have forgotten her password, and answering her security questions by doing simple research. It is surprising that a candidate for national office would do something as stupid as to create security questions that anyone could answer just by researching her, but then again we are talking about Sarah Palin.
Morale of the story: Do not create security questions and answers that anyone who know s anything about you could answer.
