Computer technician Trevor Harwell was arrested earlier this month for spying on women by hacking into their computers and installing malware that tricked women into putting their webcams in the bathroom so that he could take pictures of them showering. The scam worked on at least a dozen women in the Los Angeles area including several college students at Biola University where Harwell attended classes before being suspended due to a different police investigation.

Harwell's malware worked by creating pop-up warnings on victims computers telling them that there was a problem with the internal sensors of their webcams and advising them to place their laptops near hot steam for several minutes to fix the problem. Logically most of these women who didn't realize the message was fake put their computers in the only room they knew of that could produce hot steam. That room being the bathroom if and only if the shower is running, so like most people looking to save time and money on their water bills they decided to take showers while the shower was running.

Harwell is facing several charges and is currently free on bail
